I taught spinning to the Beast to Blanket students yesterday. Naturally, Bessie needed to come along.
I showed the children how to spin a single, and how to 2 ply and Navajo ply. We made drop spindles from a dowel, rubber grommet, screw-in hook and 2 CDs. They practiced parking and drafting with a long yarn leader and then began spinning their own singles with some nice Romney wool. Some of them really took off with it!
So far, the two classes have produced enough squares for a lap mat…we have 2 more weeks until we have to sew together whatever we have. It’s so exciting to see their pride in their accomplishments. None of them could knit 6 weeks ago, and now some of them are already knitting Christmas gifts.
